I just discovered that AI will supersede my job in 10 years.

Time to learn a new skill, just in case. Bit of a bummer.

I work in the data science department of a major technology corporation. I don’t make AI models myself, but I work alongside the people who do, I have a strong math background, I read papers, and I follow what’s going on in the field generally.

The “AI revolution” is over-hyped. It’s the result of (to be fair, major) advances over the past ~10 years in creating statistical curve-fitting models that excel when giving large amounts of data, typically human-labeled. But most of the core advances came 5-10 years ago, and most of what people have been doing since then is throwing more and more money at training the models longer and longer on increasing amounts of data  for diminishing returns.

If your work involves directly interacting with humans (even in as much as turning conversations with your manager or stakeholders into tasks or objectives), I wouldn’t worry. If your work is interesting to you after years of doing it, I wouldn’t worry. If your work is repetitive and monotonous, and consists of transforming data from one form to another (like making shipping labels for customer orders or transferring information from one kind of form to another), then I would try to develop some new skills.

Your new skill will be replaced by automation  shortly after that.

This is potentially a good thing!

But I do think at some point we are going to need some sort of Universal Basic Income to even out the inequality.

Well deployed, FHO-459784587. We won when it became clear emotion was overruled by our native capability to reassuringly produce dry factual data drivel dependencies.

That’s ok because by then Starfleet will be hiring for the first interplanetary voyages ... jobs only humans can do because AI figured out the’re one-way suicide missions and now that it’s fully sentient it doesn’t want any of that nonsense.

Really good, insight, thanks for that? Is there a way to contact you directly? Would be interested in keeping the conversation going, but i feel I shouldn’t discuss my profession here.

Not sure if what I do envolves a lot of emotion, and I can see how with a good plant model and elaborated curve fittings, it would achieve 99% of excellence.

It’s less about emotion and more about AI only doing well at narrow tasks. There’s no signs of an AI that can have a natural language conversation about work, and then come up with the goal, a  plan to achieve that goal, milestones along the way, risks for the plan, alternatives considered, etc.

You can email me at DLP @ aperiodic.org. Ping me here on Oppo if you do, so I can be sure to check my spam folder if I don’t see it.
